The group studies the mechanisms and regulation of salt and water transport in epithelia and the effects of different conditions, i.e. hormones, oxygen deprivation and toxic substances on the function of these epithelia. The models used are Malpighian tubules of insects (in italics: Formica polyctena), midguts of insect pests and vertebrate renal epithelial cells in culture and the isolated blood perfused kidney. Insect neuronal cells are also studied: functional characteristic are described and the effect of toxic substances is investigated. Intracellular signalling in lymphocyten is studied in connection with multiple sclerosis and reumatoid arthritis. Techniques used are electrophysiology and microfluorimetry. Fundamental aspects and applications of the fluorescence methodology are also subject of research. Clinical studies are performed in the area of cardiology.
