Title: Cys-loop ligand-gated chloride channels in DUM neurons of L. migratoria

Abstract: In this work, the functional expression of members of the cLGIC, more specifically the GluCI, GABACI and HisCI, was investigated, using electrophysiological and molecular biology techniques. The impetus for this work stemmed originally from a neurobiological point of view in order to reveal the mechanisms involved in the inhibitory neurotransmission of the neuromodulatory DUM neurons. L. Migratoria. DUM neurons have been proven a reliable in vitro model for the electrophysiological characterization of voltage-gated ion channels (Brône et al., 2003). Whether the locust DUM neurons offer an adequate in vitro electrophysiological model for the study of ligand-gated ion channels had not been established. In this work, the presence of inhibitory cysloop ligand-gated chloride channels was investigated on the somata of DUM neurons. The information gained about these inhibitory cys-loop ligand-gated chloride channels might aid the development of insecticidal compounds that are both more selective and more potent.
